Description
Acyclovir is an antiviral drug. This slows the growth and spread of the herpes virus in the body. It does not cure herpes, but it can reduce the symptoms of infection.
Acyclovir is used to treat infections caused by herpes viruses, such as genital herpes, herpes, shingles and chicken pox.
Acyclovir may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Important information
Take Acyclovir for the entire length of time prescribed by your doctor. Your symptoms can get better before completely treating the infection.
Treatment with acyclovir should be started as soon as possible after the first appearance of symptoms (such as tingling, burning, blisters).
Multiple sclerosis:
Herpes are contagious, and you can infect other people even while you are treated with acyclovir. Do not let contaminated areas come in contact with other people. Avoid touching the infected area, and then touching the eyes. Wash your hands often to prevent transmission of infection to others.
Before taking this medicine
You should not take this medication if you are allergic to acyclovir or valaciclovir . You should not take Acyclovir Chewable Tablets (Sitavig) if you are allergic to milk proteins.
In order to make sure that acyclovir is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:
Kidney disease; or
A weak immune system (caused by a disease or using a certain medication).
FDA pregnancy category B. Acyclovir is not expected to harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment.
